Definition
Nils Lofgren is the eponymous debut solo studio album by American rock musician Nils Lofgren, released in March 1975.
Overview
The album marked Lofgren’s first solo effort after the dissolution of his band Grin. Recorded between 1974 and 1975 at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, it was issued by A&M Records. The record received positive contemporary reviews, notably a favorable 1975 assessment in Rolling Stone by Jon Landau, and has since been cited in retrospective lists of the year’s best releases. It spent nine weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 141 on May 10, 1975. Reissues followed in 1990 (Rykodisc) and 2007 (Hip‑O Select), the latter featuring remastered sound.
Etymology / Origin
The title is a straightforward self‑title, a common practice for debut solo albums. Because of the distinctive circus‑billboard illustration on its cover, the record is colloquially known as the “Fat Man Album.” No alternative meanings or linguistic roots are associated with the title beyond this visual nickname.
