Niklaus Riggenbach (13 July 1817 – 21 August 1895) was a Swiss mechanical engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur, best known for developing the first successful rack railway system, commonly referred to as the Riggenbach rack.
Early life and education
- Born in Zürich, Switzerland, Riggenbach trained as a mechanic and later studied engineering.

- Riggenbach rack system: In the 1860s, Riggenbach designed a toothed rack rail that could be engaged by a locomotive’s gear wheels, allowing trains to ascend steep gradients safely. The system was first implemented on the Vitznau–Rigi Railway (opened 1871), the world’s first mountain rack railway.
- Locomotive design: He also constructed purpose‑built rack locomotives equipped with the necessary gear mechanisms to operate on his rack tracks.
- Railway construction: Riggenbach contributed to the planning and construction of several Swiss mountain railways, including the Brünig line and the Zug–Rigi line.
Business activities
- In 1858, he founded the company Riggenbach & Co., which manufactured rack railway equipment, locomotives, and related mechanical components.
