Niihari District (新治郡, Niihari-gun) was a former administrative district located in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The district existed from the Meiji period until it was dissolved in the early 21st century as part of municipal mergers.
Geography
- The district was situated in the central part of Ibaraki Prefecture, bordering the Pacific coast to the east.
- It encompassed a mix of agricultural land and small urban settlements, with terrain primarily consisting of flat plains suited to rice cultivation.
Historical Overview
- Establishment: Niihari District was created in 1878 during the early Meiji government’s reorganization of local administration.
- Municipal composition: Over time, the district comprised several towns and villages, including the towns of Iwama, Takahagi (later elevated to city status and separated from the district), and the village of Tsukuba.
- Mergers and dissolution:
- In 2001, the town of Iwama merged with the city of Kasama, reducing the district’s extent.
- On March 28, 2005, the remaining municipalities of Niihari District—namely the town of Tsukuba and the village of Yawara—were merged into the newly formed city of Tsukuba. Consequently, Niihari District was officially dissolved.
Administrative Legacy
- The former area of Niihari District now forms part of the city of Tsukuba, which is known for its scientific research institutions and technology parks.
