Nigel Spink

Nigel Martyn Spink (born 8 August 1958) is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is most renowned for his long and successful career with Aston Villa, where he made over 400 appearances across all competitions and was a key member of the team that won the European Cup in 1982.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Spink was born in Chelmsford, Essex. He began his career with non-league club Chelmsford City before signing with Aston Villa in December 1977.

Club Career

Aston Villa

Spink spent the majority of his playing career at Aston Villa, becoming one of the club's most iconic figures.

  • European Cup Glory (1982): His most famous moment came in the 1982 European Cup Final against Bayern Munich. After Villa's first-choice goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer suffered an injury just nine minutes into the match, the inexperienced Spink, who had only made one previous first-team appearance, was brought on as a substitute. He delivered an outstanding performance, keeping a clean sheet against the formidable German side and helping Aston Villa secure a historic 1–0 victory. This performance instantly cemented his place in Villa folklore.
  • Longevity and Consistency: Following the European Cup win, Spink established himself as Villa's first-choice goalkeeper for over a decade. He consistently performed at a high level, making 460 appearances in total for the club before departing in 1996. He was known for his agility, command of his area, and excellent shot-stopping abilities.

Later Career

After leaving Aston Villa, Spink continued his playing career with several other clubs:

  • West Bromwich Albion: He joined West Bromwich Albion in 1996 and played for two seasons, making 88 appearances.
  • Millwall: Spink had a brief spell with Millwall in 1998, featuring in 5 matches.
  • Forest Green Rovers: He then moved to non-league club Forest Green Rovers, where he combined playing with coaching duties. He eventually took on the role of player-manager before retiring from playing in 2001 at the age of 42.

International Career

Spink represented England at U21 level. He also received a call-up to the full England squad during his time at Aston Villa but remained an unused substitute, thus not earning a full international cap.

Managerial and Coaching Career

Following his retirement from playing, Spink transitioned fully into coaching:

  • Forest Green Rovers: After serving as player-manager, he remained as manager of Forest Green Rovers until 2002.
  • Assistant Roles: He has held various coaching and goalkeeping coach positions at clubs such as Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, and Bristol City, working alongside managers like Steve Bruce.
