Nicotianoideae

Nicotianoideae is a subfamily of flowering plants within the family Solanaceae, the nightshade family. The subfamily comprises primarily herbaceous species, including the economically important genus Nicotiana (tobacco), as well as several smaller genera. Members of Nicotianoideae are characterized by their often aromatic foliage, the presence of nicotine and related alkaloids, and a diversity of growth forms ranging from annual herbs to perennial shrubs.

The exact composition of the subfamily varies among taxonomic treatments, but Nicotiana remains the core genus.

Morphological Characteristics

Economic and Cultural Significance

The most notable economic importance stems from cultivated tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum and N. rustica), which is processed for leaf tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, and nicotine products. Alkaloids extracted from these plants, especially nicotine, have been employed pharmacologically as insecticides and in nicotine replacement therapies.

Phylogeny and Evolution

Molecular phylogenetic studies using chloroplast and nuclear DNA markers indicate that Nicotianoideae diverged early from other solanaceous lineages. The subfamily exhibits considerable genetic diversity, reflecting adaptive radiation into varied ecological niches.

Conservation

While many Nicotiana species are cultivated, several wild taxa are considered threatened due to habitat loss, especially those endemic to restricted tropical regions. Conservation assessments are conducted by organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
