Nicomachus (scribe)

Nicomachus was a scribe active during the Byzantine era. The specific dates of his birth and death are not definitively known, however, his work survives in the form of manuscripts. Nicomachus is principally known for his contributions to the transmission and preservation of classical texts, particularly those relating to mathematics and music theory. He is often associated with the copying and emendation of works attributed to the earlier Nicomachus of Gerasa, a noted mathematician and music theorist of the 2nd century CE. While the exact nature of Nicomachus's contributions (whether simply copying or also annotating and editing) is sometimes debated by scholars, his role in ensuring the survival of these important texts is acknowledged. His work is valuable to modern researchers in understanding the textual history and transmission of classical learning throughout the Byzantine period. Specific identifying features of his script, such as particular letter formations or common scribal errors, are often used by paleographers to identify manuscripts attributable to him or his workshop. The study of his work allows researchers to gain insights into the practices of Byzantine scribes and the cultural context in which they operated.
