Nicola Signorello

Nicola Signorello (1918 – 28 September 1995) was an Italian politician affiliated with the Christian Democracy (Democrazia Cristiana, DC) party. He was active in national politics during the post‑World War II period and held several elected and appointed positions.

Early life and education
Born in Rome in 1918, Signorello pursued higher education in law, obtaining a degree from the Sapienza University of Rome. His early professional career was rooted in the legal and administrative sectors, which later facilitated his entry into public service.

Political career

  • Christian Democracy: Signorello joined the DC, the dominant centrist party in Italy during the 1950s–1970s, and rose through its internal ranks.
  • Italian Senate: He served as a Senator of the Italian Republic from 1976 until 1992, representing the constituency of Lazio. During his tenure, he participated in numerous legislative commissions, notably those dealing with finance, public administration, and constitutional affairs.
  • Ministerial office: In the early 1980s, Signorello was appointed to the national cabinet, holding the portfolio of Minister of the Treasury and Civil Service (sometimes listed as Minister of the Treasury and Public Administration) from 1980 to 1981 under the government of Prime Minister Arnaldo Forlani. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing Italy’s fiscal policy, public budgeting, and administrative reforms.
  • Other roles: Beyond his ministerial duties, Signorello held several undersecretary and advisory positions within various ministries and was involved in the administration of public entities linked to economic development.

Later life and legacy
After retiring from active politics in the early 1990s, Signorello remained a respected figure within the DC’s veteran circles. He died in Rome on 28 September 1995. His contributions are noted in discussions of Italy’s post‑war financial administration and the internal dynamics of the Christian Democracy party.
