Nicol McColl (1812 – April 17, 1878) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Elgin West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative member from 1867 to 1871.
Life and career
McColl was born in Glen Orchy, Argyleshire, Scotland in 1812 and grew up there. He immigrated to Upper Canada in 1831. He married Jeannet Campbell in 1845; after her death, he married Mary McIntyre in 1858. McColl served on the councils for Middlesex and Elgin counties.
In the 1867 Ontario general election, McColl was elected as the Conservative member for the newly established riding of Elgin West, defeating Liberal candidate S. McCall with 909 votes (52.27%) to 830 votes (47.73%). He served in the 1st Parliament of Ontario from September 3, 1867, to February 25, 1871. During his tenure, he served on the Standing Committee on Railways, the Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, and a Select Committee to consider a bill regulating line fences and watercourses.
His son, Dugald McColl, also later represented Elgin West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
McColl died in Southwold, Ontario in 1878 at the age of 66.
