Nicholas "Nick" Woodman (born June 24, 1975) is an American businessman and entrepreneur. He is best known as the founder and CEO of [[GoPro]], a company that manufactures action cameras and develops mobile apps and video-editing software. Woodman's vision for immersive, point-of-view cameras revolutionized the consumer electronics market and the way people capture and share their experiences.
Early Life and Education
Woodman was born in [[San Mateo, California]], to [[Dean Woodman]] (an investment banker) and [[Connie Woodman]]. His father was a co-founder of the investment bank [[Robertson Stephens]]. Woodman attended the [[Menlo School]] in Atherton, California. He pursued higher education at the [[University of California, San Diego]] (UCSD), where he graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor's degree in visual arts.
Career
Early Ventures
Before founding GoPro, Woodman pursued several entrepreneurial ventures, though with limited success.
- Funbug: His first startup was Funbug, an online gaming and marketing platform that ultimately failed during the [[dot-com bust]] of the early 2000s.
- EmpowerAll.com: Following Funbug, he attempted to launch EmpowerAll.com, a website selling electronic goods at a slight markup to provide a commission to users who promoted the site. This venture also did not achieve significant traction.
Founding GoPro
The inspiration for GoPro came to Woodman during a surf trip to [[Australia]] and [[Indonesia]] in 2002. Frustrated by the inability to capture high-quality action photos of himself and his friends surfing, he conceived of a wearable, waterproof camera system. He envisioned a device that could be easily attached to the body or equipment, offering an immersive point-of-view perspective.
Upon his return, Woodman dedicated himself to bringing his idea to life. He initially funded GoPro (then known as Woodman Labs) by selling shell necklaces and belts out of his [[Volkswagen Type 2]] van along the California coast, and with financial contributions from his parents. The first GoPro camera, a 35mm film camera wrist strap system, was introduced in 2004. It was designed to be worn on the wrist, allowing surfers and other action sports enthusiasts to capture their experiences from their own perspective.
Growth and Innovation
Under Woodman's leadership, GoPro rapidly evolved, continually innovating its camera technology:
- Digital Transition: The company transitioned from film to digital cameras, introducing the first digital GoPro HERO camera in 2006.
- HD Revolution: GoPro embraced high-definition video recording, which became a significant driver of its success.
- Mounting Systems: A key part of GoPro's appeal has been its versatile mounting accessories, allowing cameras to be attached to helmets, surfboards, cars, and drones, among other things.
- Software and Ecosystem: Woodman expanded GoPro beyond just hardware, developing mobile apps and desktop software to facilitate editing and sharing of content, creating a complete ecosystem for users.
Public Offering
GoPro went public on the [[NASDAQ]] stock exchange in June 2014, with its initial public offering (IPO) valuing the company at approximately $2.95 billion. The IPO was a major milestone for the company and Woodman, making him a billionaire.
Leadership and Challenges
As CEO, Woodman has been the face of GoPro, often appearing in promotional videos and at product launches. He has maintained a focus on capturing and sharing experiences, defining GoPro's mission as "enabling people to celebrate the moment." However, GoPro has also faced significant challenges, including increased competition, slowing sales, and difficulties diversifying its product line (e.g., with the [[GoPro Karma]] drone). Woodman has steered the company through these periods, often emphasizing innovation and community engagement.
Personal Life
Nick Woodman is married to [[Jill R. Scully]], and they have two children. He is known for his passion for action sports, particularly surfing, which continues to influence his vision for GoPro.
Philanthropy
In 2015, Nick Woodman and his wife, Jill, joined The Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
