Nicholas Eversfield (c. 1646 – 1684) of Charlton Court, Steyning, Sussex, was an English landowner and politician who served briefly as a Member of Parliament for Bramber in the House of Commons in 1679.
Early life and family
Eversfield was the only son of John Eversfield and his first wife, Hester Knight, daughter of John Knight of Westergate. Through his mother’s dowry he acquired the means to purchase Charlton Court, the family seat in Steyning, Sussex. He succeeded to his father’s estate in 1678.[1]
Political career
From 1677 to 1680 Eversfield acted as Commissioner for Assessment for Sussex, overseeing local tax assessments. In the first Exclusion Parliament of 1679 he was returned as MP for the borough of Bramber, likely owing to the influence of his cousins, the Goring family, who controlled the constituency’s patronage.[1] During his brief parliamentary tenure he made no recorded speeches and did not serve on any committees.[1]
Personal life
On 29 June 1674, Eversfield married Elizabeth Gildridge, the daughter of Nicholas Gildridge of Eastbourne.[1]
Death
Nicholas Eversfield died in 1684, aged around thirty‑eight.[1]
