Ngerengere is a ward (administrative division) in Morogoro District, Morogoro Region, Tanzania. It is located south of the A7 trunk road, which connects Dar es Salaam to Morogoro. The settlement is named after the Ngerengere River. As of 2022, Ngerengere had a population of 15,509 people. The Tanzania People's Defence Force maintains the Ngerengere Air Force Base (an airbase of the Tanzanian Air Force Command) near the vicinity.
Ngerengere River is a river in the Morogoro Region of Tanzania. It rises in the Uluguru Mountains and flows eastwards to join the Ruvu River. The city of Morogoro is situated on the Ngerengere River. The Mindu Dam, built on the river beginning in 1978, has been subject to controversy due to rapid siltation from deforestation and mercury pollution from nearby gold mining.
Etymology and other meanings: In the Rwanda-Rundi language (Kirundi), ngerengere (class 9/10 noun) means "gazelle." The word was borrowed from an extinct Tale South Cushitic language; compare Burunge geraʔi ("Grant's gazelle"). In Swahili (Kiswahili), Ngerengere is also the name of a ward in Moshi Municipality, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania.
