Definition Newel Knight (1780–1847) was an early convert to the Latter Day Saint movement and a close associate of Joseph Smith, the founder of the movement. He is recognized in historical records primarily for his role within the early Church of Christ, later known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
Overview Newel Knight was born on September 13, 1780, in Marlborough, Massachusetts. He moved with his family to Colesville, New York, where he became one of the first individuals baptized into the Church of Christ following its organization in 1830. Knight was a farmer by occupation and known for his loyalty and steadfast support of Joseph Smith during the early years of the church’s formation. He participated in significant early events, including the attempt to establish a Zion community in Jackson County, Missouri, and later in Kirtland, Ohio. Knight also served briefly as a leader in the Colesville Branch and was involved in early missionary efforts.
Etymology/Origin The name "Newel" is of English origin, possibly derived from the Norman surname "de Noailles," or from the French term "noue," meaning "knoll" or "small hill." "Knight" is an occupational surname of Anglo-Saxon origin referring to a medieval warrior or servant of noble rank. There is no evidence that the name holds symbolic meaning within the context of the Latter Day Saint movement; it was a family name passed down through generations.
Characteristics Historical accounts describe Newel Knight as a physically strong and sincere individual. He was reportedly present during some of Joseph Smith’s early visions and spiritual experiences. One notable account records an incident in which Smith allegedly healed Knight during a severe epileptic or spiritual seizure in 1829, an event documented in some Latter Day Saint historical sources, including the journal of Joseph Smith. Knight was known for his commitment despite personal hardships, including persecution, displacement, and poor health.
