Newbeat

Newbeat is a subgenre of electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in Belgium in the late 1980s. It is characterized by its slowed-down tempo (typically around 80-110 BPM, slower than house or techno), hypnotic and often repetitive rhythms, and a dark, atmospheric mood.

Origins and Influences: Newbeat emerged from the Belgian electronic music scene, drawing influences from a variety of sources, including:

  • Acid House: The squelching sounds and hypnotic qualities of acid house were a key ingredient.
  • EBM (Electronic Body Music): The industrial edge and repetitive rhythms of EBM contributed to Newbeat's darker sound.
  • Italo Disco: Some elements of Italo disco's melodies and synthesizer sounds can be detected in certain Newbeat tracks.

Often, DJs would mistakenly play 45 RPM records at 33 RPM, accidentally creating the slowed-down tempo that became a defining characteristic of the genre.

Characteristics: The typical characteristics of Newbeat music include:

  • Slow Tempo: A tempo range of approximately 80 to 110 beats per minute.
  • Repetitive Rhythms: Simple, hypnotic drum machine patterns that loop for extended periods.
  • Dark Atmosphere: A generally dark and sometimes melancholic mood created by minor key melodies and atmospheric synthesizer pads.
  • Industrial Influences: The use of samples and sounds reminiscent of industrial music.
  • Synthesizer-Driven: Heavy use of synthesizers for both melodic and rhythmic elements.
  • Heavy Use of Reverb and Delay: To create a sense of space and depth.

Notable Artists and Tracks: While the genre was relatively short-lived, a number of artists and tracks are considered classics of the Newbeat sound. Some of the more recognized include:

  • A Split-Second
  • The Concrete Beat
  • Erotic Dissidents
  • Confetti's
  • Liaisons D
  • Technotronic (early work)

Decline and Legacy: Newbeat's popularity peaked in the late 1980s and early 1990s, after which it gradually faded from mainstream attention. However, it has had a lasting influence on subsequent genres of electronic music, particularly techno and hardcore. Elements of Newbeat can still be heard in modern electronic music production, often as a retro influence or a nod to the genre's unique sound. The genre has experienced periods of revival and renewed interest from electronic music enthusiasts.
