The third and final season of New Zealand Idol, a competitive reality talent show searching for New Zealand's next singing superstar, premiered on TV2 on 16 July 2006 and ran weekly until the grand final on 29 October 2006. The season was hosted by television presenter Dominic Bowden, with a judging panel featuring Iain Stables, Megan Alatini, and Frankie Stevens. The winner was Matthew Saunoa (aged 21, from Levin), with Indira Moala (aged 21, from Glen Eden, Auckland) finishing as runner-up. The finals venue was the St. James Theatre in Wellington.
Auditions
Auditions were held at the following locations:
- Telstraclear Pacific Events Centre, Manukau
- Westpac Stadium, Wellington
- Addington Raceway, Addington, Christchurch
Successful contestants proceeded to the "Top 60" theatre rounds held at Sky City in Auckland.
Theatre Week
The successful contestants spent three days of audition rounds at the Sky City theatre.
- Round One (Day 2): Contestants, in groups of six, sang a cappella a song of their own choice. The entire 58 contestants sang before the judges decided which 22 would be eliminated.
- Round Two (Day 2): 18 of the 37 remaining contestants paired up for duet performances of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". The remaining contestants sang Maroon 5's "Sunday Morning". Ten contestants were sent home.
- Round Three (Day 3): The remaining 27 contestants performed one of six pre-selected songs. Following this round, nine contestants were eliminated. The final five — Toni, Lenken, Birgette, Ben, and Emilie — were given one more chance to sing for the four remaining places in the Top 18. Birgette was the last contestant eliminated.
Semi-Finals
The semi-finals consisted of three groups, with the top three from each group advancing to the Top 10, plus one wildcard entry.
- Group 1: Advancing — Kali Kopae, Ashlee Fisher, Clinton Randell. Wildcard contender: Lenken Isaac.
- Group 2: Advancing — Indira Moala, Victor Sulfa, Toni Baird. Wildcard contender: Wiremu Hohaia.
- Group 3: Advancing — Matt Saunoa, Aroha Robinson, Rebecca Wright. Wildcard contender: Ben Hazlewood.
- Wildcard: Ben Hazlewood advanced to the Top 10.

The Grand Final
The grand final was held on 29 October 2006. Each finalist performed the winner's single "Hold Out", along with a cover song. The Top 10 also performed group numbers. Matt Saunoa was declared the winner.
After the Show
Clinton Randell (eighth place) later became a radio host on The Edge Breakfast in the 2010s and 2020s. This was the final season of New Zealand Idol; the show was not renewed for a fourth season.
