The New York Liberty is a professional women's basketball team based in New York City that competes in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Overview
Founded in 1997 as one of the WNBA’s eight original franchises, the Liberty have played in the Eastern Conference since the league’s inception. The team’s home games are currently held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, having previously played at Madison Square Garden (1997–2017) and the Nassau Coliseum (2018–2022). The Liberty have qualified for the WNBA playoffs numerous times, reaching the WNBA Finals in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2002, but have not yet secured a championship. The franchise is owned by a consortium that includes the Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. and other investors.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Liberty” references the iconic Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and a landmark situated on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The term was selected to evoke the city’s heritage and to convey themes of empowerment and independence, aligning with the league’s emphasis on women's athletics.
