Neuhaus (chocolatier)

Neuhaus is a renowned Belgian chocolatier, celebrated for its high-quality chocolates and its significant contributions to the art of chocolate-making, most notably the invention of the Belgian praline and the ballotin gift box.

History and Origins The company was founded in 1857 by Jean Neuhaus (born in Switzerland, of Italian origin), who opened a pharmacy in the prestigious Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert in Brussels, Belgium. To make his medicines more palatable, Neuhaus would cover them in a layer of chocolate. His son, Frédéric Neuhaus, continued this tradition, gradually shifting the focus from medicine to confections.

The most significant innovation came in 1912 when Jean Neuhaus II, the grandson of the founder, invented the praline (also known as a Belgian chocolate bonbon). Unlike the earlier solid chocolate confections, Neuhaus's praline featured a soft, creamy, or nutty filling encased in a shell of chocolate. This innovation quickly became a sensation.

In 1915, Jean Neuhaus II's wife, Louise Agostini, further revolutionized chocolate presentation by inventing the ballotin. Prior to this, chocolates were sold in simple paper bags. The ballotin, a sophisticated and protective gift box, not only prevented chocolates from being damaged but also elevated them to a luxurious gift item.

Over the decades, Neuhaus maintained its reputation for exquisite quality and innovative products, expanding its presence both within Belgium and internationally.
