Netball South Africa

Netball South Africa (NSA) is the recognised national governing body for the sport of netball in the Republic of South Africa. It is affiliated with World Netball, the international federation for the sport, and with Africa Netball, the regional governing body. The organisation is responsible for the administration, development, and promotion of netball across the country, including the management of national representative teams, domestic leagues, youth and junior programmes, coaching and umpiring development, and the organisation of national and regional competitions. NSA’s headquarters are located in Arcadia, Pretoria.

History

  • Early years: In 1951 the all‑white South African Women’s Netball Association was founded, and its president represented South Africa at the inaugural International Netball Conference in London in 1957. South Africa became a founding member of the International Federation of Netball Associations (now World Netball) in 1960.
  • Post‑apartheid era: Following the end of the sporting boycott against apartheid South Africa, Netball South Africa was established as the unified governing body in 1992, succeeding the previously segregated associations. The organisation has since overseen the integration of players, officials, and administrators from all racial groups.

Structure and Leadership
The executive management of NSA includes a President, Vice‑President, Chief Executive Officer, and a number of directors responsible for specific functional areas such as selections, coaching, umpiring, and development. As of the latest publicly available information, the President is Mami Diale, the Vice‑President is Khosi Dlamini, and the CEO is Adam Brooke.

National Teams
NSA administers the South Africa women’s national team (the SPAR Proteas), the men’s national team, and youth squads (U‑21, U‑19, etc.). The SPAR Proteas compete in major international events such as the Netball World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Quad Series, Fast5 Netball World Series, and regional tournaments like the Diamond Challenge.

Domestic Competitions
Key competitions overseen by NSA include:

  • Telkom Netball League (TNL) – the premier senior domestic league, featuring provincial and franchise teams.
  • Diamond Challenge – a regional competition that serves as a qualifier for the Netball World Cup.
  • Varsity Netball – university‑level competition.
  • Various junior and provincial leagues designed to develop talent at grassroots levels.

Affiliations and Membership

  • World Netball (global governing body)
  • Africa Netball (regional federation)
  • South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC)

Controversies and Governance Issues
In April 2025, World Netball suspended former NSA President Cecilia Molokwane amid allegations of financial mismanagement related to the R90 million grant awarded for hosting the 2023 Netball World Cup. Subsequent parliamentary scrutiny highlighted delays in the publication of audited financial statements and questions over unexplained expenses. Molokwane was removed from office in October 2025. These events prompted reforms within NSA’s financial and governance structures.

Development Initiatives
NSA runs programmes aimed at expanding participation, improving coaching standards, and increasing umpire accreditation. Initiatives include school‑based netball development, talent identification pathways, and community outreach projects designed to promote gender equity in sport.
