Definition
Netball New Zealand is the national governing body for the sport of netball in New Zealand. It oversees the administration, development, and promotion of netball at all levels, from grassroots to elite competition, within the country.
Overview
Netball New Zealand is responsible for managing domestic competitions, supporting regional netball associations, and developing players, coaches, and officials. The organization also manages the national women's netball team, known as the Silver Ferns, which competes internationally in events such as the Netball World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. Netball New Zealand operates under the international governance of World Netball (formerly the International Netball Federation) and collaborates with other national netball organizations across the Netball Americas and Asia regions.
The organization plays a key role in promoting participation in netball, which is one of the most popular team sports for women and girls in New Zealand. It implements programs aimed at increasing access to the sport, enhancing performance pathways, and ensuring inclusivity and sustainability in the sport's structure.
Etymology/Origin
The name "Netball New Zealand" derives from the sport "netball" and the nation "New Zealand." The organization was formally established as the national governing body in 1924, originally under the name "New Zealand Basketball Association." The term "basketball" was used initially, as netball evolved from early forms of women's basketball. In 1970, to avoid confusion with the modern sport of basketball, the organization changed its name to "Netball New Zealand."
