Neoregelia capixaba

Neoregelia capixaba is a species of flowering plant in the Bromeliaceae family, native to Brazil. It is a popular ornamental plant known for its vibrant foliage.

Classification

  • Family: Bromeliaceae
  • Subfamily: Bromelioideae
  • Genus: Neoregelia
  • Species: N. capixaba

Etymology

The specific epithet "capixaba" is derived from the term used to refer to the native people or residents of the state of Espírito Santo in Brazil, indicating the plant's origin in that region.

Distribution and Habitat

Neoregelia capixaba is endemic to Brazil, primarily found in the state of Espírito Santo. It typically grows as an epiphyte (on trees) or occasionally as a lithophyte (on rocks) in humid forest environments.

Description

Neoregelia capixaba forms a compact rosette of broad, strap-like leaves. The plant is highly prized for its striking coloration, which intensifies towards the center of the rosette, especially when the plant is mature and approaching bloom. The central leaves often display shades of red, pink, or purple, contrasting with the greener outer leaves. Like other Neoregelia species, its inflorescence is submerged within the central "cup" formed by the rosette, which collects water. The flowers themselves are typically small and inconspicuous, often white or lavender.

Cultivation

This species is widely cultivated as an indoor plant or in tropical gardens for its ornamental value. It prefers bright, indirect light and high humidity. The central cup of the rosette should be kept filled with clean water, which should be refreshed regularly. Good air circulation is beneficial. Neoregelia capixaba can be propagated from offsets (pups) that emerge from the base of the mother plant.
