Neohaemonia melsheimeri is a species of aquatic beetle in the family Dytiscidae, the predaceous diving beetles. The species was first described by the American entomologist John Lawrence LeConte in 1857.

Etymology
The specific epithet melsheimeri honors the early American entomologist Frederick Valentine Melsheimer (1782–1873), who made significant contributions to the study of North American insects.
Description
Adults are small to medium-sized diving beetles, typically 5–7 mm in length. They have an elongate‑oval, smooth dorsum that is dark brown to black. The fore‑ and hind‑wings are fully developed, and the beetles are capable of strong swimming. Like other dytiscids, they possess natatorial hind legs fringed with hairs for propulsion in water.
Distribution and Habitat
Neohaemonia melsheimeri is native to North America. Recorded occurrences include the eastern United States and adjacent regions of southern Canada. The species inhabits lentic and slow‑flowing lotic waters—such as ponds, marshes, and the margins of streams—where aquatic vegetation is present.
Biology and Ecology
Both larval and adult stages are predatory, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates. Adults are capable of flight and may disperse to temporary water bodies. Reproduction occurs in the water; females lay eggs on submerged substrates, and larvae develop through several instars before pupating in moist terrestrial habitats adjacent to water.
Conservation Status
The species has not been assessed for the IUCN Red List and is not known to be of conservation concern. It is considered relatively widespread within its range and occurs in a variety of freshwater habitats.
