Nelson Burton Jr.

Nelson Burton Jr. (born June 30, 1942) is an American former professional ten‑pin bowler and longtime television broadcaster for the sport of bowling. He is the son of Hall of Fame bowler Nelson Burton Sr.

Early life and education
Burton was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up in a bowling‑oriented family; his father, Nelson Burton Sr., was a prominent professional bowler who won multiple titles on the early Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour. Burton Jr. learned the sport at an early age and later attended the University of Missouri, where he played collegiate bowling.

Professional bowling career
Burton joined the PBA Tour in the early 1960s. Over the course of his career he captured three PBA Tour titles, one of which was a major championship:

  • 1971 BPAA U.S. Open (major)
  • 1972 PBA Brunswick Invitational
  • 1978 PBA Greater Detroit Open

His competitive career spanned more than two decades, and he was known for a smooth delivery and consistent lane play. Burton retired from full‑time competition in the early 1980s but continued to compete in selected events and senior tournaments.

Broadcasting career
Following his retirement from competitive bowling, Burton transitioned to television broadcasting. Beginning in 1990, he became a color commentator and analyst for ESPN’s bowling coverage, later working for Fox Sports when the network acquired PBA broadcasting rights. Over a period of more than two decades, Burton was recognized for his insightful analysis, clear explanations of lane conditions, and personable on‑air presence. He contributed to the production of instructional segments and special events, helping to popularize the sport to a broader audience.

Honors and recognition

  • Inducted into the Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame (1990).
  • Inducted into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame (2002) in the Performance category.
  • Recognized by the Bowling Hall of Fame for his contributions to broadcasting and promotion of the sport.

Personal life
Burton resides in St. Louis County, Missouri. He remains involved in the bowling community through coaching clinics, charitable events, and occasional appearances at PBA tournaments. His son, Nelson Burton III, has also pursued a career in bowling, continuing the family’s multigenerational involvement in the sport.
