Nelly (Egyptian entertainer)

Nelly Artin Kalfayan (Arabic: نيللي آرتين كالفيان; Armenian: Նելլի Արթին Գալֆայան; born 3 January 1951 in Cairo, Egypt) is an Egyptian actress, singer, comedian, dancer, television personality and all‑around entertainer. She is best known for her work in Egyptian cinema and television, particularly for the popular “Fawazir Ramadan” (Ramadan puzzle) television series that aired during the holy month of Ramadan.

Early life and family
Nelly was born into an Armenian‑Egyptian family. Her older sister, Feyrouz, was a famous child actress, and she is a cousin of the well‑known Egyptian film actress Lubluba. Her father was a film producer, which facilitated her early entry into the entertainment industry.

Career

Film and early acting
Nelly began her career as a child actress, appearing in films such as El Harman, Asafir El Gennah, Hati Naltaqi and Tuba. At age 17, she obtained her first leading role in Mahmoud Zulfikar’s Al Murahiqa (1966). Over the course of her career she performed in more than 60 films, many of which were musical comedies that combined song, dance and comic elements. She frequently co‑starred with prominent Egyptian actors, including Salah Zulfikar, with whom she appeared in seven films.

Television and “Fawazir Ramadan”
Nelly’s most enduring contribution to Arab popular culture is the series of “Fawazir Ramadan” shows, a set of televised puzzle‑games interwoven with music and dance. The programmes, broadcast daily across major Arab television networks during Ramadan, featured a different thematic premise each year, such as Fawazir Al‑Khatbah (1981) and Fawazir Zay El‑Naharda (1996). The final original “Fawazir” she produced aired in 1996; a later special, Alf Leila Wa Leila, was presented in 2001.

Later work
Since the early 2000s Nelly has largely retired from acting and music production, appearing mainly as a guest on talk shows and serving as a judge on talent‑search programs such as the Egyptian edition of The X Factor (2006).

Personal life
Nelly was married to Egyptian film director Houssam El‑Din Mustafa, later engaged briefly to musician Moody Elemam, and subsequently married businessman Khaled Barakat, with whom she lived for a period in London before divorcing.
