Over the course of his tenure, he accumulated more than 100 appearances for the province, contributing to Ulster’s Heineken Cup victory in the 1998–99 season. Known for his work rate, tackling, and ball‑carrying ability, he became a regular starter in the back row.

Retirement and post‑playing activities
Persistent shoulder and knee injuries forced McMillan to retire from professional rugby in 2005. Following retirement, he pursued a career in business development and remained involved in rugby through coaching roles at the amateur level in Belfast. He has also undertaken ambassadorial duties for various charitable initiatives linked to sport and youth development in Northern Ireland.

Personal life
McMillan is married and has two children. He continues to reside in the Belfast area and maintains connections with the rugby community through mentorship programs and guest speaking engagements.

Legacy
While not achieving a high number of international caps, McMillan is remembered for his integral role in Ulster’s early professional successes and for representing Ireland during a period of transition for the national side. His professionalism and commitment to the sport have been cited by former teammates and coaches as exemplary.
