Neerlandia is an unincorporated hamlet in central Alberta, Canada, situated within the County of Barrhead No. 11. The community lies approximately 54 km (34 mi) north of the town of Barrhead and 130 km (81 mi) northwest of Edmonton, at an elevation of roughly 735 m (2,411 ft) above sea level.
History
Neerlandia was founded in 1919 by a group of Dutch immigrants who purchased the land through the Canadian Pacific Railway’s homestead program. The settlement was intended to preserve Dutch cultural and religious traditions, and its name reflects this heritage: “Neerlandia” is derived from “Nederland,” the Dutch word for the Netherlands. Early development centered on farming, with residents cultivating grain and raising livestock.
Geography and Infrastructure
The hamlet is located along Highway 18, which provides road access to neighboring communities. It is part of the Western Alberta region, characterized by mixed prairie and forest landscapes. Neerlandia does not possess a municipal government; local services are administered by the County of Barrhead No. 11.
Community and Culture
Neerlandia maintains a strong Dutch cultural identity, exemplified by community events such as an annual celebration of Dutch heritage and the presence of a Dutch Reformed church. The hamlet hosts a community hall that serves as a venue for social gatherings, sporting events, and educational activities.
