Ned Vizzini (July 28 1981 – December 19 2013) was an American author noted for his contributions to young adult literature, particularly for his semi‑autobiographical novel It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2006). The novel, which explores themes of mental health, anxiety, and depression, was later adapted into a feature film released in 2010.
Early Life and Education
Vizzini was born in New York City and raised in the surrounding metropolitan area. He attended Stuyvesant High School, a specialized public high school in Manhattan, before enrolling at Vassar College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. During his college years, he wrote for the college newspaper and began developing his writing skills.
Literary Career
Vizzini’s first published work was the young adult novel Be More Chill (2004), which follows a teenage boy who discovers a mysterious pill that promises social success. The book received mixed reviews but established Vizzini as a voice within the teen fiction market.
His second novel, It's Kind of a Funny Story, draws directly from Vizzini’s personal experience with a brief stay at Bellevue Hospital’s psychiatric unit. The narrative follows 15‑year‑old Craig Gilner, who checks himself into an inpatient facility after a depressive episode. The book was praised for its candid portrayal of mental illness and was listed among the New York Times Best Sellers.
A sequel, The Other Side of Happy, was published posthumously in 2014. It continues the story of Craig Gilner and addresses themes of recovery and the complexities of returning to everyday life after a mental health crisis.
Vizzini also contributed short stories and essays to various anthologies and magazines, including The New York Times Magazine and The Atlantic.
Personal Life and Death
Vizzini was openly candid about his struggle with mental health issues, particularly depression and anxiety. He was married to Lindsay Ogren, a fellow writer and filmmaker. On December 19 2013, Vizzini died by suicide in New York City at the age of 32.
Legacy
Vizzini’s work is frequently cited in discussions of mental health representation in young adult literature. It’s Kind of a Funny Story has been used in educational settings to foster dialogue about depression and suicide prevention. Scholars and mental health professionals have highlighted the novel’s impact on destigmatizing discussions of mental illness among adolescents.
