Nea Penteli (Greek: Νέα Πεντέλη) is a residential suburb and municipal unit located in the northern part of the Athens metropolitan area, within the regional unit of North Attica, Greece. It lies at the foot of the Penteli mountain range, approximately 12 kilometres (7 mi) northeast of the centre of Athens.
Geography
Nea Penteli occupies an area of roughly 4.5 km² (1.74 sq mi) and is characterized by a mix of low‑rise apartment blocks, detached houses, and green spaces. The suburb is situated at an elevation of about 200 m (656 ft) above sea level. It is bordered by the municipal units of Penteli to the south and east, and by the neighboring suburb of Ekali to the north.
Administrative status
Since the 2011 Kallikratis reform, Nea Penteli has been incorporated as a municipal unit within the municipality of Penteli. Prior to that reform, it functioned as an independent community (dēmos). It is part of the periphery of Attica and falls under the jurisdiction of the North Attica regional unit.
Demographics
According to the 2021 census conducted by the Hellenic Statistical Authority, Nea Penteli had a resident population of approximately 9,400 inhabitants. The population density is around 2,089 inhabitants per km². The demographic profile is typical of suburban areas surrounding Athens, with a mixture of families, professionals, and retirees.
History
The name “Nea Penteli” translates to “New Penteli,” reflecting its development as a modern extension of the older village of Penteli. The area experienced significant urban growth during the post‑World War II period, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, as Athens expanded outward. The settlement was primarily agricultural before becoming a residential district, and many of its early residents were migrants from other parts of Greece seeking employment in the capital.
Transportation
Nea Penteli is served by the Attiki Odos (Motorway 8) and several regional bus routes that connect it to central Athens and surrounding suburbs. The nearest railway stations are located in the neighboring suburbs of Kifisia and Metamorfossi, providing access to the Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) network.
Education and public services
The municipal unit hosts a number of primary and secondary schools, both public and private, as well as child care centers and community facilities. Health services are provided by clinics and pharmacies within the suburb, while hospitals are accessible in the nearby areas of Marousi and Kifisia.
Culture and landmarks
Nea Penteli is primarily residential and does not contain major historical monuments. However, its proximity to the Penteli mountain range offers recreational opportunities such as hiking trails, picnic areas, and viewpoints over the Athens basin. The suburb participates in local cultural events organized by the municipality of Penteli, including festivals, concerts, and exhibitions.
Economy
The local economy is largely service‑oriented, with retail stores, cafés, and small businesses catering to residents. Many inhabitants commute to central Athens for employment in sectors such as finance, education, public administration, and the private industry.
