Overview

The funicular serves as a vital link for both residents and tourists, providing easy access between the beach area and Sítio, a historic district known for its sanctuary, lighthouse, and panoramic viewpoints. The journey offers spectacular views of Nazaré beach, the town below, and the vast ocean.

History

The Nazaré Funicular was inaugurated on July 28, 1889. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, who was responsible for several other funiculars and elevators in Portugal, including the Santa Justa Lift in Lisbon.

Initially, the funicular operated using a water ballast system, a common method for early funiculars where water was used to weigh down the descending car, helping to pull the ascending car upwards.

In 1930, the funicular underwent a significant modernization, being electrified and replacing the water ballast system with electric motors.

A tragic accident occurred in 1963 when a cable snapped, causing one of the cars to plunge down the track. This incident resulted in several fatalities and injuries. Following the accident, the funicular was completely rebuilt and re-equipped with enhanced safety features. It reopened in 1968.

Since then, the funicular has undergone further renovations and maintenance to ensure its continued safe operation and to modernize its infrastructure.
