National Route 612, also known as Route 612, is a secondary national road in Costa Rica, located entirely within the province of Puntarenas. It serves as a crucial access route to the remote Osa Peninsula region, most notably connecting the main highway network to Bahía Drake (Drake Bay) on the Pacific coast.
Route Description
Route 612 begins as a turn-off from National Route 238, south of Rincón de Osa. From this junction, the route extends generally southwestward through the rugged and biodiverse terrain of the Osa Peninsula. It traverses primary and secondary rainforests, agricultural areas, and small local communities before culminating at Bahía Drake. The road is largely unpaved for most of its length, characterized by gravel, dirt, and often challenging conditions, particularly during the rainy season (May to November). River crossings, uneven surfaces, and steep gradients are common features. Its approximate length is around 40-50 kilometers (25-31 miles), making the journey time-consuming despite the relatively short distance.
