Nathan Thompson (born 16 February 1978) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Football Club and the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A powerful key forward known for his strong marking and goal-kicking ability, Thompson was a prominent player in the late 1990s and 2000s, despite battling significant injury issues throughout his career.
Early Life and Junior Career Thompson grew up in Benalla, Victoria, and played junior football for the Benalla Saints. He was recruited by North Melbourne with pick 11 in the 1996 National Draft.
AFL Career
North Melbourne (1997–2004) Thompson made his debut for North Melbourne in 1997. After a slow start to his career, he established himself as a key player in the Kangaroos' forward line. He was a vital member of the North Melbourne team that won the 1999 AFL Premiership, kicking two goals in the Grand Final victory over Carlton. He was the club's leading goalkicker in 2001, booting 52 goals for the season. Injuries, particularly to his knees, began to impact his career during his later years at North Melbourne, limiting his game time. He played 111 games and kicked 206 goals for the Kangaroos.
Hawthorn (2005–2008) At the end of the 2004 season, Thompson sought a trade to Hawthorn in search of a fresh start and to manage his recurring knee problems. His move to the Hawks proved successful in the short term, as he enjoyed a resurgence in form. He was Hawthorn's leading goalkicker in both 2005 (52 goals) and 2006 (45 goals). He became a crucial target in a developing Hawthorn forward line alongside Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead. However, his injury woes continued, ultimately forcing his retirement from the AFL at the end of the 2008 season, having played 60 games and kicked 118 goals for Hawthorn.
Playing Style Thompson was renowned for his physical strength, leading to strong contested marks and a powerful kick for goal. His aggressive approach and ability to stand up in big moments made him a respected figure on the field. Despite his talent, his career was frequently interrupted by a series of knee injuries, requiring multiple reconstructions and significant rehabilitation.
