Natalie Neita

Natalie Neita-Headley (born c. 1965), commonly known as Natalie Neita, is a prominent Jamaican politician and former Cabinet Minister. A long-serving member of the People's National Party (PNP), she has represented the constituency of North Central St. Catherine in the Parliament of Jamaica since 2007.

Early Life and Pre-Political Career Prior to her entry into electoral politics, Neita-Headley established a significant career in sports administration. She notably served as the team manager for Jamaica's national netball team, the "Sunshine Girls," and also held the position of Vice President of Netball Jamaica. Her extensive experience in sports management provided a strong foundation for her later governmental roles.

Political Career Natalie Neita-Headley was first elected as the Member of Parliament for North Central St. Catherine in the 2007 general election, representing the People's National Party. She has successfully retained her parliamentary seat in subsequent elections, demonstrating consistent support within her constituency.

Following the People's National Party's victory in the 2011 general election, Neita-Headley was appointed to key ministerial portfolios within the Cabinet of Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller:

  • Minister with Responsibility for Sport (2012-2016): In this role, she made history as the first woman to hold the substantive portfolio of Minister of Sport in Jamaica. Her tenure focused on national sports policy, development, and athlete welfare.
  • Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (2012-2016): Concurrent with her sport ministry role, she also held responsibilities within this crucial economic and technical ministry, overseeing various projects and policy initiatives.

After the PNP's defeat in the 2016 general election, Neita-Headley transitioned to roles within the Shadow Cabinet. She has served as the Shadow Minister for Health and Wellness, among other responsibilities, actively contributing to the opposition's legislative critiques and policy proposals.
