Narrandera Shire

Narrandera Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, Australia. The shire administers a primarily agricultural district centred on the town of Narrandera, which lies on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River.

Geography
The shire covers an area of approximately 3,500 km² (1,350 sq mi). Its terrain consists of flat to gently undulating plains that form part of the larger Murray–Darling basin. The Murrumbidgee River traverses the shire, providing water for extensive irrigation schemes. The Hume Highway, a major interstate route linking Sydney and Melbourne, passes through the shire’s eastern side.

History

  • Municipality of Narrandera: Established in 1885, the municipality governed the urban centre of Narrandera.
  • Narrandera Shire: Formed under the Local Government (Shires) Act 1905 and formally proclaimed on 7 March 1906 to administer the surrounding rural district.
  • Amalgamation: On 1 January 1980, the Municipality of Narrandera and Narrandera Shire were amalgamated to create the present‑day Narrandera Shire, consolidating urban and rural administration under a single council.

Governance
Narrandera Shire Council is the statutory authority responsible for local services, planning, and community development. The council comprises nine councillors elected proportionally from a single ward for four‑year terms. The council elects a mayor from among its members at the first meeting after each election.

Demographics
According to the 2021 Australian Census, the shire had an estimated resident population of approximately 5,800 people, with a median age slightly higher than the national average. The population is distributed between the town of Narrandera and several smaller localities and rural properties.

Economy
The shire’s economy is dominated by agriculture, benefiting from the region’s extensive irrigation infrastructure. Primary production includes:

  • Rice and other cereals (wheat, barley)
  • Cotton and horticultural crops
  • Sheep and beef cattle grazing

Associated industries such as grain handling, storage, and transport also contribute to local employment.

Infrastructure and Services

  • Transport: In addition to the Hume Highway, the Narrandera railway station provides rail connectivity on the Main South line.
  • Health: The Narrandera Regional Health Service provides primary health care, including a hospital and community health centres.
  • Education: Public schools include Narrandera Public School (primary) and Narrandera High School (secondary).
  • Recreation and Culture: Notable community facilities include the Narrandera Irrigation Museum, Moira Lake (a popular fishing and water‑sports venue), and a series of public parks and sporting clubs.

Environmental Management
Given its reliance on irrigation, the shire participates in state‑wide water‑resource planning and environmental management programs to balance agricultural productivity with river health and biodiversity conservation.
