Definition
Nam Cheong Estate (Chinese: 南昌邨) is a public rental housing estate located in the Sham Shui Po district of Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is owned and managed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority.
Overview
Developed as part of the government's program to provide affordable housing, Nam Cheong Estate was constructed in the mid‑1970s. The estate is situated near the intersection of Nam Cheong Street and Yen Chow Street, adjacent to the Nam Cheong MTR station (served by the Tung Chung and Tuen Ma lines). The estate provides residential units for a sizeable population of low‑ to middle‑income families and includes community facilities such as a shopping arcade, a market, a community centre, and open recreational spaces.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Nam Cheong” (南昌) is derived from the nearby Nam Cheong Street, which in turn references the historic Chinese city of Nanchang in Jiangxi Province. The use of “Estate” follows the convention for naming public housing projects in Hong Kong.
