Definition
Nakagawa (中川町, Nakagawa-chō) was a town located in Miyako District, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It existed as an independent municipality until its merger into the expanded city of Miyako on March 20 2006.
Overview
- Geographic location: Situated in the central part of Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū, Nakagawa lay along the Chikugo River basin and was bordered by the towns of Miyako, Miyako (city), and others within Miyako District.
- Area: The town covered a total area of approximately 28.23 km² (10.90 sq mi).
- Population: As of 2003, Nakagawa had an estimated population of 7,825, resulting in a population density of about 277 persons per km².
- Administrative changes: On 20 March 2006, Nakagawa merged with the neighboring town of Miyako (also in Miyako District) to form the new city of Miyako. Consequently, the former town ceased to exist as a separate administrative entity.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Nakagawa” is composed of two kanji characters: 中 (naka), meaning “middle” or “central,” and 川 (kawa/gawa), meaning “river.” The name likely references the town’s position relative to local waterways, particularly its proximity to the middle reaches of the Chikugo River system.
Characteristics
- Economy: The local economy was traditionally based on agriculture, with rice cultivation and vegetable farming predominating due to the fertile alluvial soils of the river plain. Small‑scale manufacturing and service industries also contributed to the town’s economic profile.
- Transportation: Nakagawa was served by regional road networks linking it to the city of Miyako and other parts of Fukuoka Prefecture. The nearest railway stations were located in Miyako, providing access to the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line.
- Education and culture: The town operated several elementary and junior high schools, and community centers hosted cultural festivals that highlighted regional traditions, such as the annual rice‑planting celebration.
- Environment: The surrounding landscape featured a mix of cultivated fields, low hills, and riverine ecosystems, supporting a variety of bird species and aquatic life typical of the Chikugo River basin.
