Definition
Nagashino Castle (長篠城, Nagashino‑jō) was a Japanese feudal castle situated in the area of present‑day Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture. It functioned as a strategic stronghold during the Sengoku period and is best known for its involvement in the Battle of Nagashino in 1575.
Overview
Constructed as a hirayamajiro (hill‑top castle built on relatively low terrain), Nagashino Castle served as a defensive base for forces allied with Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu. In May 1575, the castle became the focal point of a major confrontation when the Takeda clan, led by Takeda Katsuyori, launched an assault. The defending Oda–Tokugawa army employed large numbers of arquebusiers, achieving a decisive victory that marked a turning point in Japanese warfare. After the battle, the castle fell into disuse and was largely dismantled during the early Edo period. Today, only earthworks, stone foundations, and a small memorial remain at the site.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Nagashino” (長篠) combines the characters 長 (“long”) and 篠 (“bamboo grass”). The etymology likely refers to the area's historical landscape, which was characterized by extensive bamboo groves. Accurate details regarding the original founder of the castle are not definitively confirmed; historical records attribute its establishment to local warlords allied with the Oda clan in the mid‑16th century.
