Definition
Naftali Bennett (born 25 March 1972) is an Israeli politician, former minister, and entrepreneur who served as the 13th Prime Minister of Israel from June 2021 to June 2022.
Overview
Bennett was born in Haifa, Israel, to parents who had immigrated from the United States. He served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a commando in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit, participating in several operations, including the 1995 rescue of hostages at the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires. After his military service, he pursued a career in technology and business, co‑founding the software company Cyota, which was sold in 2013.
Entering politics in 2012, Bennett was elected to the Knesset in 2013 as a member of the right‑wing Likud party. He held a series of ministerial portfolios, including Minister of Economy, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Education. In 2019, he founded the right‑wing nationalist party The New Right (HaYamin HeHadash), which later merged into the broader centrist‑right alliance Yamina. Following the 2021 Israeli elections, Bennett entered a coalition government with parties across the political spectrum, becoming Prime Minister under a rotation agreement with Yair Lapid. He stepped down in June 2022 when Lapid assumed the premiership.
Etymology/Origin
The given name “Naftali” is of Hebrew origin, derived from the biblical figure Naftali, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, and traditionally interpreted as “my struggle” or “my wrestling.” The surname “Bennett” is of Anglo‑French origin, historically a variation of “Benedict,” meaning “blessed.” In Bennett’s case, the family name reflects his paternal lineage, which traces back to American immigrants.
