Nabbingo is a residential community and sub‑county located in Wakiso District in the Central Region of Uganda. Situated approximately 20 kilometres south‑west of Kampala, the nation's capital, it lies along the Kampala–Masaka Road, a major transportation corridor linking Kampala with southwestern Uganda.
Geography and Administration
Nabbingo forms part of the Busiro County within Wakiso District and is administered by local council structures (LC III). The area is characterized by low‑lying, gently undulating terrain typical of the central Ugandan plateau, with a tropical wet and dry climate. Its coordinates are approximately 0°15′N latitude and 32°30′E longitude.
History
The settlement developed during the colonial period as a locus for missionary activity and agricultural settlement. In the early 1940s, the Catholic Church established St. Francis Junior Secondary School for Girls (commonly known as Nabbingo Girls' School) on land donated by local leaders. The school has since become a notable educational institution in the region.
Education
Nabbingo Girls' School, founded in 1942, offers primary and secondary education and is administered by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala. The school is recognized for its academic performance and for fostering female education in central Uganda.
Economy and Infrastructure
The local economy is predominantly based on small‑scale agriculture, with residents cultivating crops such as maize, beans, and sweet potatoes. Commercial activities include retail shops, markets, and service establishments that serve the surrounding rural population. The proximity to the Kampala–Masaka Road provides residents with access to larger urban centres and facilitates the movement of goods and people.
Demographics
As of the most recent national census (2014), Nabbingo and its immediate environs had an estimated population of roughly 15,000 inhabitants, composed primarily of the Baganda ethnic group, who speak Luganda as their primary language.
Transportation
Public and private minibusses (known locally as “matatus”) and motorcycle taxis provide frequent transport links between Nabbingo, Kampala, and neighboring towns such as Mpigi and Ssabagabo. The main road is paved and maintained by the Uganda National Roads Authority.
