Definition
NOAAS Delaware II was a United States fisheries research vessel operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as part of its fleet of oceanographic and biological survey ships.
Overview
Commissioned in 1964, the ship served for more than four decades conducting marine‑biological, fisheries, and oceanographic investigations along the Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. Operated under the auspices of NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Delaware II contributed to stock assessments, habitat studies, and the development of fisheries management policies. The vessel was decommissioned in 2009 and subsequently removed from service.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Delaware II” denotes the second NOAA vessel to bear the name of the U.S. state of Delaware. The practice of reusing state names with a Roman numeral suffix is common in NOAA’s ship‑naming conventions, indicating lineage and continuity within the agency’s research fleet.
