NIC Argentina

NIC Argentina (formally the Dirección Nacional del Registro de Dominios de Internet .AR, or National Directorate of Internet Domain Registry .AR) is the governmental entity responsible for the administration, registration, and management of domain names under Argentina's country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD), which is .ar.

Overview NIC Argentina serves as the designated Network Information Center for the Argentine internet space. Its primary function is to maintain the registry for all .ar domain names, ensuring their proper allocation, operation, and resolution. This includes various second-level domains such as .com.ar (for commercial entities), .org.ar (for non-profit organizations), .gob.ar (for government institutions), .int.ar (for international organizations), .mil.ar (for military institutions), .net.ar (for internet service providers), and .tur.ar (for tourism-related entities). Since 2019, direct registrations under the generic .ar domain (e.g., example.ar) have also been permitted.

Structure and Affiliation Historically, the administration of the .ar domain was overseen by the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship (Cancillería Argentina). In 2014, through Decree No. 58/2014, its administration was transferred to the Secretariat of Legal and Technical Affairs of the Presidency of the Argentine Nation (Secretaría Legal y Técnica de la Presidencia de la Nación). This move aimed to centralize and enhance the efficiency of digital administration processes within the national government, placing NIC Argentina under an office directly reporting to the President of Argentina.

Services and Functions NIC Argentina provides a critical range of services for the Argentine internet community:

  • Domain Registration: Facilitates the registration of new .ar domain names for individuals, companies, and organizations.
  • Domain Management: Offers tools for registrants to manage their domain names, including updating contact information, delegating DNS servers, transferring domains, and renewing registrations.
  • Policy Enforcement: Implements and enforces the rules and policies governing domain name registration, including regulations designed to prevent cybersquatting and resolve disputes between parties with conflicting interests over a domain name.
  • Whois Service: Operates a public Whois database, which provides access to information about registered domain names and their associated registrants, in compliance with applicable privacy regulations.
  • Technical Stability: Contributes to the technical stability and security of the .ar ccTLD, ensuring the reliable resolution of domain names within Argentina and globally.

Evolution and Modernization NIC Argentina has undergone significant modernization efforts throughout its history, particularly in response to the evolving internet landscape and international best practices for ccTLD management. A notable development was the introduction of direct .ar registrations in 2019, which expanded registration options and aligned Argentina's domain policy with many other countries that offer direct ccTLD registrations. These policy changes are typically preceded by public consultation periods and are formalized through decrees and resolutions.

Significance As the sole administrator of the .ar ccTLD, NIC Argentina plays a fundamental role in Argentina's digital infrastructure, national identity, and economy. It provides the essential framework for Argentine businesses, government bodies, educational institutions, and individuals to establish and maintain their online presence, contributing to the country's digital development and connectivity.
