Mustafa Kamal (judge)

Justice Mustafa Kamal (1 January 1937 – 5 January 2015) was a prominent Bangladeshi jurist who served as the 9th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. His judicial career spanned several decades, culminating in his appointment to the highest judicial office in the country.

Early Life and Education Mustafa Kamal was born on 1 January 1937, in the then British India (present-day Bangladesh). He was the son of the renowned folk singer and music maestro Abbas Uddin Ahmed. Kamal received his early education in his native region before pursuing higher studies. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dhaka and subsequently completed his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the same institution. He later obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) from London University.

Legal and Judicial Career Mustafa Kamal began his legal career as an advocate. His dedication and legal acumen quickly earned him recognition, leading to his appointment as a judge. He served in various capacities within the judiciary, steadily rising through the ranks. He was appointed as a Justice of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and later elevated to the Appellate Division. Throughout his career, Justice Kamal was known for his scholarly approach to law, his meticulous attention to detail, and his commitment to justice.

Chief Justice of Bangladesh On 1 June 1999, Justice Mustafa Kamal was appointed as the 9th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. He held this prestigious position until his retirement on 31 December 1999. Although his tenure as Chief Justice was relatively brief, he maintained the dignity and integrity of the office. His judgments and legal interpretations contributed significantly to the jurisprudence of Bangladesh.
