Following Slovenia’s independence in 1991, the modern municipality was established on 3 October 1994 as part of the country’s local self‑government reform, separating the town of Ruše and surrounding settlements from the former larger Municipality of Maribor.

The municipal economy is diversified:

  • Services: Retail, tourism (particularly outdoor recreation in the Pohorje foothills), and public administration.
  • Agriculture: Limited to horticulture and livestock on the river plain.

  • Education and health: Primary schools are located in Ruše; secondary education and major health facilities are accessed in nearby Maribor.

Government

The municipality is governed by a mayor (currently elected for a four‑year term) and a municipal council. It operates under the legal framework established by the Republic of Slovenia for local self‑government.

Cultural and natural landmarks

  • Fala Castle (Grad Fala): A historic 16th‑century manor overlooking the Drava River.
  • Ruše Parish Church: Dedicated to Saint Michael, featuring Baroque architecture.
