In 2012, Kawasaki moved to MLB, signing with the Seattle Mariners. He later played for the Toronto Blue Jays (2013–2014), where he became notable for his energetic personality, positive attitude, and postgame interviews, which gained popularity among fans. He briefly played for the Chicago Cubs in 2015 before returning to Japan. He rejoined the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in 2016 and played through the 2017 season before retiring. Etymology/Origin:
The name "Munenori Kawasaki" is a personal name of Japanese origin. "Kawasaki" is a common Japanese surname meaning "river cape" (川崎), while "Munenori" (宗則) is a given name composed of the kanji 宗 (mune, meaning "sect" or "origin") and 則 (nori, meaning "rule" or "law").
Characteristics:
Kawasaki was known for his strong defensive skills, versatility in playing multiple infield positions (particularly shortstop and second base), and high baseball intelligence. While not a power hitter, he had decent contact skills and on-base ability in NPB. In MLB, his offensive contributions were limited, but he was valued for his team-first attitude, leadership, and ability to energize clubhouse environments. His charismatic personality, coupled with his limited English and enthusiastic interviews, made him a fan favorite, particularly during his tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays.
