Mughiphantes is a genus of spiders in the family Linyphiidae, commonly known as sheet weavers or money spiders. The genus was established in 1999 by arachnologists Michael I. Saaristo and Andrei V. Tanasevitch.
Taxonomy and Classification
The genus belongs to the subfamily Micronetinae within the Linyphiidae family. Many species currently assigned to Mughiphantes were originally classified under the large and complex genus Lepthyphantes before being reassigned during taxonomic revisions based on specific morphological characteristics of the genitalia.
Description and Morphology
Spiders in this genus are generally small in size, a common trait among the Linyphiidae. They are characterized by specific structures in the male pedipalps and the female epigynum (genital structures). Detailed microscopic examination of these reproductive organs is typically required to differentiate Mughiphantes from closely related genera and to identify individual species.
Distribution and Habitat
The genus is primarily distributed throughout the Palearctic realm, with high concentrations of species diversity found in Europe and Asia. A significant number of species are endemic to mountainous regions, including the Himalayas, the Alps, and various ranges across Central Asia and Russia. They are typically found in ground-level microhabitats such as leaf litter, moss, or under stones, where they construct small, horizontal sheet webs to capture prey.
Species Diversity
As of recent taxonomic records, the genus contains over 60 recognized species. The type species for the genus is Mughiphantes mughi (Fickert, 1875). Due to the remote and specialized habitats many of these species occupy, new members of the genus continue to be described as arachnological surveys of mountainous regions progress.
