Behavior and Life Cycle
- Nest Construction: Female mud daubers collect fine, wet mud using their mandibles and carry it to a chosen site, where they shape it into tubular or pot‑shaped cells. Each cell is provisioned with one or more paralyzed arthropod prey, most commonly spiders.
- Provisioning and Oviposition: After sealing a cell with a final mud cap, the female deposits a single egg onto the prey mass. The larva hatches, consumes the immobilized prey, and develops within the sealed cell.
- Development: Larvae undergo several instars before pupating. The adult emerges after completing metamorphosis, typically in late summer or early autumn, depending on climate.

Mud daubers contribute to the regulation of spider populations, acting as biological control agents. Their nests provide microhabitats that can be reused by other insects after the original occupants abandon them. While generally non‑aggressive toward humans, females may sting if directly handled.
