Definition
Mount Faber is a hill situated in the central-southern part of Singapore. It forms part of the Southern Ridges park network and is a popular viewpoint and recreational area offering panoramic vistas of the city‑state’s skyline, harbor, and surrounding islands.
Overview
Mount Faber rises to an approximate elevation of 105 metres (344 ft) above mean sea level, making it one of the higher natural elevations within the highly urbanised island. The hill was originally a strategic military site during the British colonial era, hosting a battery and supporting facilities. In the late 20th century the area was redeveloped for public recreation, featuring landscaped gardens, walking trails, and a historic cable car line connecting it to Sentosa Island. The hill’s summit is accessible via road, footpaths, and the Singapore Cable Car, which provides a scenic aerial link to the nearby resort island.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Mount Faber” commemorates Captain H. R. Faber of the Royal Engineers, who was instrumental in the construction of the original military installations on the hill during the 19th century. The usage of “Mount” follows the conventional English naming practice for prominent isolated elevations, despite the modest absolute height relative to mountainous terrain elsewhere.
