Motorpsycho is a Norwegian rock band formed in Trondheim in 1989. The group’s music incorporates elements of psychedelic rock, indie rock, alternative rock, progressive rock, hard rock, and noise rock, and has evolved through various styles including grunge, heavy metal, jazz, post‑rock, pop, and country.

Career overview
The band took its name from the 1965 Russ Meyer film Motorpsycho. Initially an alternative‑metal outfit, Motorpsycho quickly broadened its sound, producing the ambitious double album Demon Box (1993), which earned a Norwegian Grammy nomination and built a dedicated following in Scandinavia and parts of Europe. Throughout the 1990s the group released new material annually, maintaining critical acclaim despite modest commercial sales.
A stylistic shift occurred with the 2000 release Let Them Eat Cake, which introduced a smoother, jazz‑inflected approach that continued on Phanerothyme (2001) and It’s A Love Cult (2002). After drummer Håkon Gebhardt’s departure, the band issued the double album Black Hole/Blank Canvas (2006) and followed with Little Lucid Moments (2008), featuring new drummer Kenneth Kapstad.
In 2009 Motorpsycho recorded the vinyl‑only album Child of the Future with engineer Steve Albini. Their 2010 album Heavy Metal Fruit marked the first collaboration with external producer Kåre Vestrheim. Subsequent releases have included live recordings such as Strings of Stroop – Motorpsycho Live at Effenaar (2011) and continued studio work into the 2020s.
