Overview
Motherjane is an Indian rock band formed in 1996 in Kochi, Kerala. The group is recognized for fusing progressive rock with Carnatic and world‑music elements, making it one of the most influential contemporary rock acts in India.
Origins and Early Years (1991–2000)
The band originated when drummer John Thomas, guitarist Mithun Raju and bassist Clyde Rozario were asked to fill a last‑minute opening at a college festival held by St. Albert’s College, Kochi. Initial members also included vocalists Laji George and Nirmal David. After early lineup changes, the group operated primarily as an instrumental ensemble until 1999 when guitarist Baiju Dharmajan replaced Raju. In 2000 vocalist Suraj Mani joined, contributing original compositions and solidifying the band’s direction.
Breakthrough and Major Releases (2002–2008)
Motherjane released its debut studio album Insane Biography in 2002. The record garnered critical acclaim within the Indian independent music scene for its innovative blend of Western rock structures with Indian classical motifs. Their second album, Maktub (2008), further cemented their reputation, receiving multiple national awards and extensive coverage in publications such as Rolling Stone India.
Hiatus and Reunion (2009–present)
Following a period of reduced activity after 2008, Motherjane entered a hiatus that lasted roughly twelve years. In early 2024 the band announced a reunion tour commemorating the 15th anniversary of Maktub. Since then they have performed at several high‑profile festivals—including the Hornbill Festival (2024), Mahindra Independence Rock (2024) and Bengaluru Hubba (2025)—and released new material, notably the album Dobāreh (2024), marking their first full‑length release after the hiatus.
Musical Style
Motherjane’s sound is characterized by:
