Morshansk is a town located in the Tambov Oblast of the Russian Federation. It serves as the administrative center of the Morshansky District and is situated on the banks of the Tsna River, approximately 90 kilometers north of the regional capital, Tambov.
Historical records mention the settlement as early as the 16th century, originally known as the village of Morsha. It was granted town status in 1779 during the administrative reforms of Catherine the Great. Throughout the 19th century, Morshansk developed into a significant commercial hub for the trade of grain, cattle, and hemp, facilitated by its location on the Tsna River.
The town’s economy is currently supported by several industrial sectors, including textile manufacturing, food processing, and the production of chemical equipment. Morshansk is also a station on the Kuibyshev Railway line, which connects it to other major regional centers.
Architecturally, the town is known for the Trinity Cathedral (Troitsky Sobor), a large Neoclassical structure completed in the mid-19th century, which remains one of the prominent landmarks of the region. As of the early 21st century, the population of Morshansk is estimated to be between 37,000 and 40,000 residents.
