Morrison Hill

Morrison Hill is a geographical feature and neighbourhood located in the Wan Chai District of Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. The hill rises to an elevation of approximately 30 metres (100 ft) above sea level and lies east of Wan Chai, south of Victoria Harbour, and west of the district of Causeway Bay.

Geography
The hill occupies a narrow ridge that runs roughly north‑south between the coastal reclamation of Wan Chai and the elevated terrain of Causeway Bay. The area is bounded by Hennessy Road to the north, Morrison Hill Road to the east, and the Hong Kong Museum of History to the west. The hill’s topography has been significantly altered through land reclamation and urban development, resulting in the construction of public facilities and residential estates on its slopes.

History
The name “Morrison Hill” is derived from Sir John Morrison, a senior colonial administrator in Hong Kong during the early 20th century; the naming is recorded in official colonial maps dated 1930. Prior to urban development, the hill was largely undeveloped and contained a small cemetery that was cleared in the 1960s to make way for public housing.

During the post‑World War II period, the Hong Kong government undertook a series of redevelopment projects on Morrison Hill, including the construction of the Morrison Hill Estate (public housing) and the establishment of community amenities. The hill’s eastern slope was partially leveled to extend Wan Chai Road and to build the Morrison Hill Footbridge, which connects the area to the nearby Shau Kei Wan district across the harbour.

Cultural references
The hill has been referenced in local literature and media as a symbol of the rapid urban transformation of Hong Kong’s mid‑20th‑century landscape.
