Moreni oil field

Definition
The Moreni oil field is an onshore hydrocarbon reservoir located near the town of Moreni in Dâmbovița County, Romania. It is part of the country's historic oil‑producing region and has been in operation since the early 20th century.

Overview
The field lies within the Western Carpathian geological province, an area characterized by folded sedimentary sequences that host a number of productive petroleum traps. Discovered in the late 19th century, Moreni quickly became one of Romania’s principal oil‑producing sites, contributing to the nation’s status as one of the world’s earliest large‑scale oil exporters. Production has been carried out by a succession of state‑owned and later privatized operators; since the 1990s the field has been managed by Petrom, Romania’s largest integrated oil and gas company, which is now majority‑owned by Austria’s OMV Group.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Moreni” derives from the nearby town of Moreni, itself traced to a Romanian personal name “Moren” or to the word “mor” (meaning “plague” or “pest”) combined with the suffix “‑eni” indicating “people of”. The oil field adopted the local toponym when it was first identified by geologists in the 1890s.

Characteristics

Aspect Details
Geological setting The field occupies anticlinal structures within the Miocene‑Pliocene clastic sequences of the Carpathian foreland basin.
Reservoir rocks Predominantly sandstones and conglomerates with moderate porosity (10–18 %) and permeability (50–200 mD).
Depth Primary producing horizons are situated at depths ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters (≈4,000–6,000 ft) below mean sea level.
Hydrocarbon type Light to medium‑gravity crude oil (API ≈ 35–38) with associated natural gas shows.
Production history Initial commercial output began in the early 1900s; peak production was reached in the mid‑20th century, after which output gradually declined. Contemporary production is modest, primarily supporting local fuel and feedstock needs.
Current status The field remains in operation under enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, such as water flooding and selective well stimulation, to extend its economic life. Exact current production rates are not publicly disclosed.
