Moradabad division

Definition
Moradabad division is an administrative geographical unit (division) of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It functions as an intermediate level of governance between the state government and its constituent districts.

Overview
The division is headquartered in the city of Moradabad and comprises several districts, traditionally including Moradabad, Bijnor, Rampur, Amroha, and sometimes Bareilly and other adjacent districts depending on periodic administrative reorganisation. The Divisional Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service officer, oversees the division, coordinating development programs, law and order, and statistical monitoring across its districts. The division forms part of the larger administrative framework of Uttar Pradesh, which is divided into 18 divisions.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Moradabad” derives from the city of Moradabad, itself named after Nawab Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, a 17th‑century ruler of the Rohilkhand region. The suffix “‑abad” is of Persian origin, meaning “city” or “settlement.” Consequently, “Moradabad division” denotes the division centred on the city of Moradabad.

Characteristics

  • Administrative Structure: Led by a Divisional Commissioner, the division includes district magistrates/collectors for each district, along with subordinate officers from various state departments (e.g., police, education, health).
  • Geography: Situated in the Rohilkhand region of north‑central Uttar Pradesh, the division lies on the fertile plains of the Ganges basin, with a mix of urban centres, agricultural land, and industrial zones.
  • Economy: Moradabad city is renowned as a major hub for brass and metal handicrafts, contributing substantially to the division’s industrial output. Agriculture, particularly wheat, rice, and sugarcane, dominates the rural economy.
  • Demographics: The division hosts a diverse population comprising Hindus, Muslims, and other religious communities, with linguistic usage primarily of Hindi and Urdu.
  • Infrastructure: The division is served by an extensive road network, rail connections (including the Moradabad–Delhi line), and proximity to major airports in Delhi and Lucknow. Educational institutions, hospitals, and governmental offices are concentrated in Moradabad and other district headquarters.
